Kujichagulia, (Self-determination): To define ourselves, name ourselves, create for ourselves, and speak for ourselves

 Join the Black United Fund of Sacramento Valley (BUFSV), the Brickhouse Art Gallery (BAG) and the Sacramento Area Black Caucus (SABC), Sunday,  December 27, 2015  from 6-9pm at the Brickhouse Art Gallery, 2837 36th Street, Sacramento, CA 95817.

The year’s program will feature Karamu (feast), African drumming, music, libation, unity cup and candle lighting ceremonies; and much more.  

 

We are asking participants in this year’s Kwanzaa to bring a dish for the Karamu or feast, and bring NEW, UNWORN caps, neck scarves, and gloves for infants, children, women and men. On our MLK Day of Service in January 2016, we will assemble them into packets to be distributed to local homeless shelters.

We are seeking volunteers to assist with set-up and breakdown.  Donations will be gladly accepted to help defray the costs of the traveling speakers with International Concerned Family and Friends of Mumia Abu-Jamal
 
Mumia Abu-Jamal is:
  • an internationally celebrated Black writer and radio journalist
  • author of six books and hundreds of columns and articles
  • organizer and inspiration for the prison lawyers movement
  • former member of the Black Panther Party and supporter of Philadelphia’s radical MOVE organization
who has spent the last 30 years in prison, almost all of it in solitary confinement on Pennsylvania’s Death Row.

His demand for a new trial and freedom is supported by:
  • heads of state and prominent politicians worldwide (France, Africa, the Caribbean, Latin America, and elsewhere)
  • Nobel laureates Nelson Mandela, Toni Morrison, Desmond Tutu
  • the European and Japanese Parliaments
  • city governments from San Francisco to Detroit to Paris and its suburbs
  • distinguished human rights organizations such as Amnesty International
  • the Congressional Black Caucus and other members of the U.S. Congress
  • prominent civil rights groups such as the NAACP
  • numerous labor unions such as
and by scholars, religious leaders, artists, scientists and countless others who cherish democracy, human rights and justice.

Second Annual Sacramento Black Book Fair (SBBF), June 5-7, 2015


2nd Annual Sacramento Black Book (SBBF) will include book signings, talks by each featured writer, cultural vendors, foodtrucks, workshops, a book discussion by each writer listed in the program, children’s activities, poetry readings, and art displays.

 
SBBF will feature more than seventy authors of African descent showcasing and highlighting a diverse spectrum of authors and literature, from contemporary and historical fiction, to anthologies, poetry, academic books; children’s stories and books, non-fiction to biographies, self-help, and inspirational, and religious.

 
SBBF headquarters check-in and general information will be located at the Women’s Civic Improvement Club/Center (WCIC), 3555 3rd Ave., Sacramento, CA 95817.  Community members can pick-up a FREE SBBF Event Program @ WCIC-Saturday, June 6, from 9:00am-5:30pm, and Sunday, June 7 from 11:30am -5:30pm.          
This is a “Walkable Event” with nine different venues throughout historic Oak Park.

Save the date for the Sacramento Area Black Caucus (SABC) Annual Black History Month program scheduled for Sunday, February 22, 2015 from 2-4pm at Women’s Civic Improvement Center, 3555 3rd Ave., Sacramento, CA. The 2015 theme is: “Racism and Education Then- Racism and Education Now”. The event is free and open to the public. The program will feature speakers, youth and Black History display. 6th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr.'s Day of Service, Sunday, January 25, 2015

We are seeking donations of unworn winter clothing such as: hats, gloves, scarves, sweat shirts, and socks. On Sunday, January 25 at 2:00pm, we will assemble packages of new, unworn winter clothing to distribute to local homeless shelters. This year, we will also be collecting warm blankets to distribute along with the clothing. Join us at the BUF Office of the Black United Fund, 4104 44th Street, Sacramento CA. 95820.

Your generous donations will be distributed to: the Center for Community Health and Well Being, Wellspring Women’s Center, Next Move (formerly Sacramento Area Emergency Housing Center) and Loaves and Fishes, all of which provide services to individuals and families that are homeless.
